ATTN:Two – Storm The Charts Special

Editor Ben picks ten tracks from the final 40 of the Storm The Charts campaign.

Ben is the boss.

Wesley M. White is a very special person. He, along with 30,000 followers, has orchestrated the largest and most ambitious chart takeover known to mankind.

The aim of ‘Storm The Charts’ is to get 40 unsigned or independent bands into the Top 40. Out of the thousands of applicants, the top 40 were picked by a mixture of public voting, and a panel with some special guests. Out of the 40 tracks, the ATTN:Top 10 were picked by Ben.

This week sees the culmination of a few months of gargantuan effort, and you should all BUY BUY BUY your favourite track.

And is it just me, or can you not swing a fucking cat nowadays without smacking a floppy fringed accordion player? And where is this fancy dress shop selling Beirut outfits?

So, in no particular order:

Random Connection Quest – ‘Acid Natsuinka’

Hypontique, mesmeric electro doffing a fez to Keiron Hebden et al. Sounds strangely like the original Skins theme tune in parts, but we won’t hold that against them too much.

Rubika – ‘Robots’

‘Robots’ warranted inclusion purely for the sheer brazen cheek of it’s Human League/Dead or Alive rippage. Matron, hand me my legwarmers post haste.

The Banana Sessions – ‘Jukebox’

The only really twee track in our list, but it does warrant a begrudging clap-along. Like Belle & Sebastian on Sesame Street.

Air Castles – ‘Broken Watches’

Very National-esque, wine sodden miserablism. Everyone loves a good old-fashioned crescendo, right?

Morton Valence – ‘Chandelier’

Gorgeous, dreamy baroque-pop for the corner chair in a coffee shop. Word of warning though, last time I wore a beret out of the house shit went down.

Shrag – ‘Rabbit Kids’

Chums of Das Wanderlust will enjoy this, as they are, in fact, chums of Das Wanderlust. Bastard pop for the blue Smartie intimate in all of us.

Foxes! – ‘Who Killed Rob?’

On first listen, I thought someone had actually made something more irritating than a very irritating thing. But keep with it, and a sense of giddy happiness will prevail throughout. Hey, maybe Rob killed himself? It would be delicious irony.

Gabby Young and Other Animals – ‘We’re All In This Together’

Least annoying female vocalist I’ve heard in ages. slow folky musings with a little bit of Bat For Lashes – the perfect antidote to Flo-Roux Goulding.

Revere – ‘We Won’t Be Here Tomorrow’

Saved from being terrible Brit-rockers by their sense of British Sea Power like grandiosity. But that song title, nothing like tempting fate, eh?

Keston Cobblers’ Club – ‘You-Go’

Last minute addition due to a video so good, I’m willing to put up with yet another Mandolin.
