“What Would Judas Do?” is a busy three and a half minutes. New aspects of OBN’s sound surface throughout its playing time, and it’s not until it comes to a close that you have a comprehensive perspective of the band’s character. It’s for this reason that the first listen is undoubtedly the most enthralling, packed with labyrinthine twists and unexpected style switches, dripping with confidence as the band flick casually from the cheeky bass-driven swing of the verse to the screams and crashes of the chorus. So diverse is their sound that it’s likely that it won’t be to everyone’s taste from start to finish – the falsetto harmonies will be endlessly irritating to some and strangely endearing to others, and personally I found the moments the vocal breaks into a scream to be a bit feeble and strained in amongst the crescendo. But credit to them – it’s stated in their press release that OBN set out to make “quirky rock music”, and regardless of your opinion on the band’s debut single it’s hard to deny that “What Would Judas Do?” is a roaring success in that respect. Good stuff.
