Review: Love Amongst Ruin – So Sad

Ex-Placebo drummer Steve Hewitt’s new band Love Amongst Ruin get things kicked off with the single ‘So Sad’.

When I read the press release for the ex-Placebo drummer’s new band, I was disheartened. There are comparisons to both go-to namecheck Can, and sweethearts of the angry-at-nothing-in-particular Linkin Park.

Love Amongst RuinBut this single, released September 30th, is nowhere near as pretentious. I would compare the guitars to those on the recent Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster record, and the vocals have a fragility often thrown to the dogs in modern rock.

The lyrics say nothing at all, reminiscent of a teenage boy’s attempts at angry poetry when he doesn’t get the girl. In particular ‘your soul is one I see right through/you can’t see the scars that I bear‘ was a moment synonymous with looking away from ‘You’ve Been Framed!’. But all in all this is a promising start, and vocalist Steve Hewitt has done well to avoid sounding too much like Placebo.
